Blencathra, also known as Saddleback, is one of the most distinctive fells in the Lake District, rising sharply above the surrounding landscape near Keswick. Known for its dramatic ridgelines and sweeping views, it has long been a favourite among walkers and climbers, particularly for routes such as Sharp Edge. The mountain’s varied terrain, from grassy slopes to rugged rocky outcrops, reflects its geological history and adds to its striking appearance throughout the seasons.
The alternative name Saddleback comes from the mountain’s unique shape, which resembles a horse’s saddle when viewed from certain angles, particularly from the north and east. This descriptive name became widely used in the 18th and 19th centuries, especially by travellers and early guidebook writers. Meanwhile, the name Blencathra is believed to have older origins, possibly deriving from Cumbric or Old Norse, linking it to the region’s early inhabitants. Historically, the fell has been used for grazing and farming, shaping both the land and local livelihoods.
Today, Blencathra remains an iconic part of Cumbria’s landscape, attracting visitors from across the world. It represents both the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the Lake District, offering challenging walks alongside quieter routes that showcase its changing moods and panoramic vistas. As a symbol of the region’s rugged charm, Blencathra - whether known by its traditional name or as Saddleback - continues to inspire all who experience it.
