Fleetwith Pike sits at the head of Buttermere at 648 meters just a little taller than its neigbour Haystacks. It is very popular with hikers and climbers and well known for its striking Fleetwith Edge Ridge. It is often climbed alongside Haystacks and Grey Knotts. The ascent from Gatesgarth is steep but gives a rewarding and breathtaking view of the Lake District across Buttermere and the Honister Pass. The Slate Mine at Honister Crag, part of the Fleetwith Pike, is the last working mine in England where quarrying for Westmorland green slate has taken place since the late 17th century. The white cross monument on Fleetwith Edge commemorates Fanny Mercer who fell to her death in 1887 while climbing with friends.
