Rising to 950 metres (3,117 feet), Helvellyn is the third-highest mountain in England and a true jewel of the Lake District. It rests beautifully between Thirlmere and Ullswater, drawing walkers and nature-lovers from all over.
The mountain is famed for its dramatic ridges, Striding Edge and Swirral Edge, which offer unforgettable routes to the top. At the summit, instead of a sharp peak, you’ll find a broad, sweeping plateau that feels both vast and welcoming. Nestled just below is the sparkling Red Tarn, a glacial lake with a rare secret — it shelters the delicate Arctic char, a fish found in only a handful of English waters.
Helvellyn is one of the most climbed mountains in the Lakes, a favourite for generations of hikers who come to experience its beauty and challenge. As Alfred Wainwright once wrote, Striding Edge is the “finest ridge in Lakeland” — a fitting tribute to a mountain that has inspired awe for centuries.
