Scafell Pike is in the Southern Fells of the Lake District region of Cumbria. It has an elevation of 978 metres above sea level, making it the highest and the most prominent mountain in England.
The mountain is part of the Scafell massif composed of Borrowdale Volcanic rock from an extinct volcano. At its base lies Wastwater, the deepest lake in England. Broad Crag Tarn on Scafell Pike is the highest standing water in England. The Wasdale Head route is the shortest and most popular ascent to a barren summit with breathtaking views as far as Wales, Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man on clear days. Originally named “The Pikes of Sca Fell” it was donated to the National Trust in 1919 and is part of the National Three Peaks Callenge.
