Whitehaven Harbour on the west coast of Cumbria was originally developed in 17th century by Sir John Lowther to become a major coal exporting port. Pictured here the Candlestick Chimney is a remnant of the town’s coal mining heritage. The harbour expanded with Sugar Tongue Quay (importing sugar from the West Indies), Fish Quay and Lime Tongue Quay (exporting lime). All of this maritime and industrial history is showcased at the Beacon Museum from where you can admire the panoramic views over Whitehaven, the Solway Coast and the newly regenerated leisure marina.
